What are French Drains?

French drains are an ideal drainage solution for yards or properties that suffer from excess water buildup. They are an underground drainage system that directs excess water away from specific areas to a desired location for proper runoff. For instance, if your yard has a low-lying area near your home that causes pooling water, you’ll want to install a French drain to move water away from your foundation. This is accomplished by burying perforated pipes surrounded by gravel or rock in trenches that are sloped away from the area to allow for the natural flow of water.

How Do French Drains Work?

When RainDance installs a French drain system in your yard, you can expect it to work wonders! How does this drainage system solve your water woes? French drain installation will begin at the site of the pooling water, where trenches are dug in the soil. The trenches either utilize naturally sloping areas or are graded to slope away from the site toward a drainage site. Then, a layer of rock or gravel is laid in the trench, over which perforated PVC or corrugated plastic pipes are placed and topped with more gravel or rock.

The excess or pooling water will then naturally move down through the gravel or rock into the perforated pipe. The pipe takes in the water while preventing soil and other debris from entering and then directs the water down the natural slope to an outlet where the water is discharged safely without causing any harm to your landscaping or structures. This could be in a ditch, storm sewer, dry well, or other designated drainage area.
